Media search for documentary filmmakers

Find the line.
Keep the story moving.

You remember what they meant. You cannot remember which interview it was. Search the words—or the idea—and pick up the thread.

For Apple Silicon Macs. Visual search is free. Speech search requires Pro.

Invenio helps documentary editors search indexed interviews and archive footage on Mac. Pro speech search finds exact words or related meaning; visual search helps find the pictures to accompany the story.

When you have the words, use them.

A distinctive phrase is a good place to start. Search the words you remember, open a match, and listen to the surrounding exchange. The useful answer may begin before the search hit or continue after it. Keep the question and the speaker’s context in the edit.

When you only have the idea, follow it.

Memory often holds onto the subject rather than the sentence. Semantic speech search gives you another route into the material: a discussion of starting over, losing a job, or returning home. Treat the matches as candidates to review, not evidence that someone used your exact wording.

Find the picture that carries the thought.

Move from an interview theme to visual searches across your indexed archive. A closed shopfront, a crowded station, a quiet kitchen. Preview alternatives before choosing the shot that supports the sequence. File-date and quality filters help narrow a crowded result set.

Exact words and semantic speech search
  1. Add interviews and archive folders

Index a manageable set of source material on your Mac or connected storage. Use speech search with Pro for interview dialogue.

  2. Find the line and hear the context

Try exact words first when you know them, or search by meaning when you do not. Listen before and after the match.

  3. Find the supporting shot

Describe the setting or action you need. Preview the candidates, then bring the files into your editing application.

Before you start

A few practical questions.

Can I search an interview without remembering the exact quote?

Yes. Pro speech search supports searching by meaning as well as exact words. Review the matching audio to check what was actually said.

Does Invenio edit or fact-check my documentary?

No. Invenio helps retrieve source material. You make the editorial decisions, verify quotes, and assemble the film in your editor.

Can I search interviews and archive pictures in the same app?

Yes. Use speech search for dialogue and visual search for scenes in your indexed media. On-screen text search also helps when the material contains readable signs, slides, or titles.

Are interviews uploaded for transcription?

Speech processing happens locally on your Mac. Speech search requires Pro; visual and on-screen text search are available in the free plan.
